This evening we took the kids to the little playground around the corner from our house. I started chatting with a woman who was there with her two children.
She motioned to Seamus and said, "He's so cute! How old is he?"
I said, "He's almost 4."
The woman's son, who was probably around 6 years old, said, "Mom, he's so little, he doesn't look like he's going to be 4!"
Here we go! The ongoing dilemma...speak up, or let it go?
The woman started telling her son how people come in all shapes and sizes, which I found very refreshing. But I decided to speak up, and I said, "Actually, he has dwarfism. He'll only grow to be around 4ft tall."
And that mother looked at me without a moment's hesitation and said, "Well, you'll just get to hold him in your arms that much longer. I wish I could be so lucky."
I was so thankful for those words.
It's so easy for us to focus on the potential difficulties associated with being short-statured - the stares, rude comments and inappropriate questions that so many of us have had to deal with. It's wonderful to have support in these blogs when we encounter something like that.
But tonight, a total stranger gave me yet another reason to feel truly blessed as the parent of an LP child. And I couldn't wait to share that with all of you!

What a sweet woman! Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for sharing. It's always wonderful to hear about positive outcomes to inquiring people.
awww. sweet! What a good mother she was to tell her son that. I read the first paragraph of your post and I thought to myself "here we go again" ... it's pretty much always the look of confusion as we say our kids age and the person asking is trying to process it ~ sometimes it's fun to watch them be puzzled :0)
Glad you had a good trip to the playground!
That was a beautiful thing for that woman to say. We got so caught up on the phone last night about NY we didn't get to speak about it! I love how she ended-I wish I could be that lucky. Awesome. You must have felt so proud and happy.
Lucky lucky us!
Aw that brought tears to my eyes! I was just telling my friend last night about how cool it is that since Preston is little I can still pick him up all the time and he loves it. I'm sorry you encounter rude people and have to field uncomfortable questions. I think your son is absolutely charming and beautiful! I can't wait until July!
That seriously just brought tears to my eyes...because she's so right! To most people who are not familiar with the LP world, it might seem scary to have a LP child but in reality we are so very lucky. Our children have opened the door to such a wonderful world, I LOVE it!
Our children are beautiful and you're right, we are also so lucky to have our blogging family!!
That is refreshing! I always groan inside when I go through those conversations...wish there were more folks out there that are that accepting!
LOVE IT!!!!!!!
As much as i keep wanting to Cohen to "catch up" on some developmental things, I do just love that I still get to hold him as much as I want, that he sits in my lap without crawling away....your stranger said it perfectly!!!
Thanks for sharing it with us.
Love this!!!! I wish all the comments were like that! How sweet and so true and so absolutely refreshing to hear! :)
I dont think there is anything left to say..thank you for sharing such a positive experience:)
I love that story! It made my day!
Beautiful moment! I love it. There WILL be more of those.
It is a very touching story, I love the saying that people come in all shapes and sizes and that tells it all! And you Emily are doing wonderful job rasing awareness about dwarfism. The more we reach out to others like you did - the better understnding and love around us.....
Wow thats great! (So much different from some of the reactions we got last weekend!)
What a touching and heart-felt response from a total stranger. I've never thought of it that way....and she is exactly right! Thanks so much for sharing!
Great story and definitely refreshing! Love it!!
That's Awesome! What that woman said was the first thought my mom had when we found out about Olivia's dwarfism!
What a great story. It is so nice to hear the good stories.Love it!!
